What's AVID?

AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is an in-school academic support program dedicated to closing the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and other postsecondary opportunities.

AVID is not a remedial program, a free ride, or a quick fix. AVID brings research-based strategies and curriculum to educational institutions that develops students' critical thinking, literacy, and math skills across all content areas. It provides intense support with tutorials and strong relationships, creates positive peer groups, and develops a sense of hope for personal achievement gained through hard work and determination.

Who is an AVID Student?

Any student can join AVID! However, AVID students tend to be in the academic middle — they're capable of completing a college or career preparatory path with support. These students often are not realizing their full potential academically.

In the identification process, a number of criteria are considered, including state test scores, grades, citizenship, attendance, as well as desire and determination. Other considered criteria include whether the student is the first in their family to attend college, is historically underrepresented in 4-year college, economically disadvantaged, or has other special circumstances.

While all of the criteria are considered for acceptance into the program, no single criteria or lack of criteria will necessarily eliminate a student from consideration. The AVID program should reflect the demographics of the school it is serving.
