Dear James Monroe Students, Families, and Staff,

July 16th, 2025

It is with great excitement, gratitude, and a deep sense of purpose that I introduce myself as the new principal of James Monroe Middle School. My name is Mrs. Olivia Oyinatumba, and I am honored to lead a school that I’ve proudly served for the past three years as assistant principal.

My journey in education began 18 years ago as a 2nd grade teacher, and over time, I have taught and led at both the elementary and middle school levels across several schools in Albuquerque Public Schools. I’ve had the privilege of serving in multiple leadership roles—starting as a Dean of Students and administrative intern at Jimmy Carter and LBJ Middle School, later becoming the interim assistant principal at Taylor Middle School, and then assistant principal at Wilson Middle School. Most recently, I stepped in as interim principal of James Monroe Middle after Mrs. Vela’s retirement.

I was born and raised in Nigeria, and moved to New Mexico 23 years ago. I bring with me the richness of my cultural background, as well as a lifelong passion for learning. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in English and Literary Studies from Nigeria, and a Master’s degree in elementary Education, and Educational Leadership and Administration from the University of New Mexico. As both an educator and a member of this community, I value the rich cultural diversities that make James Monroe Middle School a vibrant and dynamic place to learn and grow.

One of my guiding beliefs is captured in the words of Nelson Mandela, who said:

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."

As your principal, my vision for my students is grounded in this belief. I am committed to academic excellence, while ensuring that our school is a place where all students feel safe, respected, included, and celebrated. My leadership is rooted in a strong commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. I believe that honoring our students' cultures, backgrounds, and identities is essential to their success, and I strive to create a school climate where everyone belongs.

At James Monroe, we will continue to focus on supporting the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally. This means cultivating strong relationships, promoting well-being, and helping every student discover their strengths and passions. Together with our dedicated staff, caring families, and community partners, I am excited to build on our strong foundation and lead our school into a bright future.

I look forward to learning from you, working alongside you, and celebrating all that makes James Monroe Middle School a place of excellence.

With appreciation,
Olivia Oyinatumba
